Small steps toward improving energy supply – is there cause for optimism?

WATCH | In conversation with James Mackay, CEO of the Energy Council

Welcome to "Building a better South Africa, together", a six-part web series brought to you by Anglo American in partnership with News24.

This series aims to leverage the country’s collective strength and discuss how all of society can tackle three triple challenges: crime and corruption, energy challenges and infrastructure issues.

In the final episode of Building a better South Africa, together, news broadcaster Nzinga Qunta sits down with James Mackay, CEO of the Energy Council, to discuss how South Africa is making progress in dealing with energy supply

Mackay believes the country is in a better position today to deal with energy supply in the country than in yesteryear and is optimistic there is a trail out of the woods.

A few things are needed for this process to unfold, which includes transparency, technical interventions and responses to known problems.

One such success has been the identification of 8.4GW of power that in the past has needed interventions in the past. “A reformed power grid is mission critical for a successful South Africa. It holds the keys for keeping the lights on and power generation.”

“What we have now is a collaboration of work asking, ‘what is the intervention, how will people be held accountable, and by when’,” says Mackay.

“And that for me gives confidence that we are moving in the right direction… and that unplanned losses are getting lower.”

Watch Episode 6 below, as Mackay and Qunta consider why South Africa is making small progress step-by-step towards improving energy supply.
