Mac: the best start-up buddy in any industry

For the past two months, we’ve been checking in with local professionals in various fields to find out how Apple and Mac made their business dreams a reality. Here’s what we discovered…

It’s no secret that Mac holds a special kind of magic. It unites people, young and old, professional or student—through its undeniable power, capabilities, and range.

One thing’s for sure, from start-ups to global firms, Apple and Mac take business ventures to new heights.

For the past two months, we’ve been touching base with local professionals in various fields to find out how Apple technology has made their business dreams a reality.

We were invited to witness the prowess of Mac’s ability to Syft through heavy processing data with Syft Analytics.

“From an ease of implementation perspective, it’s very easy to roll out Macs throughout our organisation - we rolled it out within one month, and the entire team switched over to MacBook Air and MacBook Pro,” shares Eleftherioz Kyriazis, fellow Syft co-founder.

We also got to watch these devices gracefully handle sensitive code, through Panda and their team who use it to build, market, and manage their democratised mental health app.

“With most laptops, you’ll probably have to get a really high spec one in order to do normal software dev, but with the Mac – like your basic entry-level Mac can actually get you up and running with no problem,” explains Dembe Tshifaro, one of Panda’s software developers.

Then we got to admire Mac’s flair for the creative through the stories shared by local creatives who appreciate Mac’s sleek design, crisp visuals, and efficiency when it comes to working across devices in the Apple ecosystem.

The Dollie House, a bespoke visual anthropology duo, have evolved their business from a humble side hustle to a registered photography business—all with the help of their Mac devices by their side.. Their team is now able to focus their creative energy on projects that spark emotion, inspire and move viewers.

“AirDrop is highly underrated, especially for large-size files. We work with a lot of high scale and high-definition media, so, nothing is lost— there’s no frame rate lost, there’s no compression, it just moves super-fast, faster than having to plug in and copy something over,” enthuses Dollie House co-founder, Rizqah Dollie.

We learned how Johann Botha similarly grew his photography enterprise, iPhoto SA, from a “garage gig”, with his daughter’s childhood bedroom acting as an office space, to the international visual solutions business it is today.

“When you switch on any Mac, it just gives you the performance. It allows you to import, it allows you to do what you need to do from an editing point of view – and it renders really fast. I’ve become a bit of an Apple addict,” beams iPhoto SA founder Johann Botha.

A different creative showed us how he makes the most of his MacBook Pro, iPhone, and iPad by creating captivating artworks that start on paper and end up becoming prints for his brand Sketchy Brett

“These devices are always interconnected and really have flawless interconnectivity and allow me to move my artworks and capture what I’m doing and put it up onto social media and YouTube,” shares Brett Field, aka Sketchy Brett.

Taking us on an unexpected but delightful journey, we saw how a small start-up turned community initiative has been creating pockets of joy, safety, and fun with their brand—Banditz Bicycle Club. This bike rental business strives to balance out the public transportation options in the busy city of Jozi and beyond, with its programmes.

“Whilst we’re cycling, and we are chaperones on these initiatives and rides – you just have your headphones on and are on FaceTime. And that’s how we actually communicate who’s where, how we’re doing, where we’re going and just be in touch with a long distance of range,” explains Bicycle Bandits co-founder Tebogo Galagala.

Bringing us to the textile side of life, we saw how streetwear fashion brand, Thesis Lifestyle, and its designers stay on top of trends and efficiently connect with their clients using the Apple ecosystem.

“I see where the future is going and I think Apple can really help our business grow in that way,” enthuses Thesis Lifestyle designer and art director, Robert Mapomane.

It’s no wonder more and more SME owners are leaning toward the Mac way of life–especially when it houses so much power under its hood.
