A sh'ot left for the whole family on KZN’s North Coast

Treat yourself and your family to a trip up the wonder-filled North Coast this festive season

When it comes to family holidays it can be tough to plan an itinerary that caters to the whole family – especially on road trips. Thankfully, KZN’s fun-filled North Coast offers a wide range of activities for everyone to enjoy.

Stretching along the coastal region north from Durban toward Mozambique you’ll find a blend of beachside, wildlife, and cultural activities to enjoy on your stay. Whether you're looking to enjoy the splendour of the great Tugela River or learn something different like the careful craft of beekeeping and monkey rescues - there’s a variety of activities to choose from to cater to the whole family.

Get a closer look at some of the highlights known to the region below:

Now that you got a taste for the region, be sure to add the following to your itinerary:

Take to the water

Naturally, the North Coast beckons visitors to its glistening bodies of water. Whether it’s the warm water beaches or the majestic Tugela River, there are plenty of opportunities to kick back and refresh with a picnic by the beach or river with the family while catching a tan. You can also enjoy the fishing spots and surfing as well as diving and snorkelling opportunities dotted along the coast.

Meet our furry ancestors

For Darwin enthusiasts as well as animal-loving kids, the Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary near Ballito is the perfect spot for a shady day hang. Meander the enclosed forest and spot some of the rescued monkeys who call the sanctuary home hiding in the tall sun-dappled tree canopies or sneaking a snack from one of the food and fruit bowls near the path. You’ll get insight into the history of the sanctuary and how they operate while also enjoying a respite from the summer heat in the forest.

Enjoy tea with the bees

A short drive from the coast will have you immersed in the backtracking hum of Seaforth Farm bees. The Bee B&B run by owner Trevor Thomson and his artist wife, Sharneen, is the perfect place to enjoy a stay or visit with some tea. The farm home is carefully decorated with pops of spring colour with floral arrangements, Trevor’s original woodwork furniture, and Sharneen’s incredible oil paintings. You can book a bee tour to learn all about the process of beekeeping, fully dressed in beekeeper gear, as well as buy some fresh honey from the farm.

Revisit an iconic landmark of our nation’s history

Serving as a fun refresher for SA adults as well as for school kids learning about SA history – the Albert Luthuli Museum transports you back in time in Groutville. Here you can go on a tour through the site as well as the original 1927 home of Chief Albert Luthuli filled with exhibits and information on the historical significance of the site as well as a timeline of our presidents over the years.

Soak up the sunset with some game

What better way to wind down from a day by the beach and out exploring than with a game drive and dinner at the Rain Farm Game & Lodge? Nestled in the hills and valleys of the Umhlali area, the farm offers lodgers and day-visitors a refresher from the saltier coastal air. You'll get the opportunity to spot some grazing game like giraffes, zebras, and other bucks. Families can also enjoy the on-site activities from swimming pools, putt-putt, and more.
