Uncovering Art in uKhahlamba Drakensberg

In a place as magically named as uKhahlamba Drakensberg, it’s hard not to feel mesmerised. uKhahlamba, in Zulu, translates into the 'Barrier of Spears' - fitting for this World Heritage Site and its rocky imposing range that borders Lesotho much like a line of spears piercing into the clouds.

The vantage points are picturesque and ethereal with their rolling hills, soft patches of shrubbery that range from bright greens to autumnal oranges and rivers that vein itself through its valleys. It’s the kind of view that steals the show in every season and weather.

While the views along this 1000km mountain range look like artwork at every step, the uKhahlamba Drakensberg caves house some of the oldest artwork known to mankind – San rock paintings. The paintings were made by San herdsman who roamed the uKhahlamba Drakensberg and KZN region, spears in hand, thousands of years ago.

The red, orange, yellow, black and white colours are derived from mixing materials such as clay, burnt wood and ochre oxides found in the area. However because of the use of these natural colourings these incredible ancient art works are prey to weathering and fading - so take your chance to see them now!

Where to Stay?

Located a short drive from thriving game parks, the Battlefields, as well as the foodie, culture, and craft hub of the Midlands - the uKhahlamba mountain range makes the perfect addition for an authentic and breathtaking KZN road trip with a dash of historic art thrown in.

There are lodges and hotels tucked away in the mountain range, like the bespoke Giant's Castle

The hotel is situated a short hike away from a great spot to view San rock art that features a museum-like set up with statues to truly transport you back into what the setting would have been like back then.

The rooms that are available for booking at Giant's Castle range from family-sized huts located near the gift store and hiking routes to couple's rooms that overlook the commanding and enchanting view of the mountain's patchwork valleys.
