Richard Melvill who shared the footage to Facebook captured the beautiful footage of the pod of dolphins enjoying the waves as much as the surfers.
Umdloti Beach might not be the first place that comes to mind for surfers, but the open section to the right of the lagoon is great for catching some easy waves. Durban and the surrounding KZN coastal areas are renowned SA surfing hotspots, playing host to one of the world's longest running surfing contests - The Ballito Pro.

Ocean life activity along the KZN coastline is busier at this time of year as conditions put the famous Sardine Run into effect. An image of which was recently took the prized top spot in the 2016 National Geographic 2016 Nature Photographer of the year competition.
During the sardine migration along the Wild Coast of South Africa, millions of sardines are preyed upon by marine predators such as dolphins, marine birds, sharks, whales, penguins, sailfishes, and sea lions. The hunt begins with common dolphins that have developed special hunting techniques to create and drive bait balls to the surface. In recent years, probably due to overfishing and climate change, the annual sardine run has become more and more unpredictable. If you're after some world-class waves, head to Ballito's Willard Beach. And if you're after more vibey surfing, Umhlanga Rocks is the obvious answer, along with the Blue Flag Beach Lucien.
You simply cannot visit Durban and not catch some of the city's waves. The long stretches sand, along with the epic East Coast waves epitomise the Golden Mile - and you shouldn't leave without testing the waters.
