Night Trotting with the iPhone 16 Pro Max – my summer nighttime date

We took the iPhone 16 Pro Max out for a night full of fun to see how it captured all the memories.

While many Mzansi summer days are spent by the coast or out in the splendour of nature, South African nights have just as much to offer. From an array of fun indoor and outdoor activities to enjoy – like karaoke cafes, bowling, night markets, or skating in cosplay – there’s plenty to do with those nearest and dearest to you.

We took the sleek iPhone 16 Pro Max from Apple’s latest iPhone range out for a night of fun to see how it captured every moment in the night light settings.

From a Halloween roller disco to traipsing around the outdoor night markets, scroll below to see all the spots we visited and the moments we captured…

The camera’s shining features:

Having trekked around in indoor, outdoor, and nighttime low-light settings with the iPhone 16 Pro Max – we’ve discovered that there’s really not much the sleek new camera set-up can’t capture. And while the camera shines in natural lighting, the night images and video footage don’t disappoint – even in the dark.

The 48MP Ultra Wide camera lens makes use of its advanced quad-pixel sensor with autofocus to allow as much detail and vibrancy into still images – whether you’re surrounded by streetlamps, neon lights, or even less. We were able to capture a lot of colour and detail in both still images and videos when testing out the device at various evening and nighttime locations.

The camera control button, located on the right side of the device, also made it easy to access and snap pictures while busy with activities like roller skating or bowling and captured all the colourful lights and action with little trouble.

And, for those who wish to enhance low-light or nighttime images – you can. The iPhone 16 Pro Max allows you to edit your image settings and look before or after you take a pic. You can choose a camera filter option before you shoot or edit the style colour and tones in your image through the Photos editor to best fit the mood you want to portray. This way, you’re able to brighten or intensify the colours in your low-light shots even more.

As for the video settings, while the Cinematic mode takes a bit longer to process light in dimmer settings, you still are able to get vibrant snippets that play with the focus on whatever cool item or accessory you stumble across at a local night street market – making it idyllic for vloggers and travellers looking to share their nighttime adventures in a creative way.

The standard HDR mode also holds up quite well in nighttime settings – likely courtesy of the camera’s 4K video resolution with 120 fps Dolby Vision.

And, if you do find yourself wanting to record all of the blackmail on your friends' karaoke debuts – you can do so with ease and the best audio option the iPhone 16 Pro Max has the ability to film footage that you can flit between audio mix setting post-recording – making sure you can hear everyone clearly as they pour their emotions out to Celine Dion.
