Minimum Requirements

• Relevant postgraduate qualification with proven experience and expertise in any or combination of the following fields: socio-economic development and/or international labour;


• Proven experience and expertise of organised labour at national and/or international level, with detailed insight into socio-economic development to add value to Council deliberations;


• Policy and research background;


• Knowledge of labour legislation, and/or international labour legislation, would be useful;


• Understanding of good governance principles, King IV code, and fiduciary responsibilities of Council members.


• Understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a university operating within South Africa’s higher education environment;


• No conflict of interest with the University; and


• Willingness to devote the requisite time and effort to attend the meetings of Council and Council committees.

• Strategic vision and good independent judgement;
• Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to attend meetings;
• Analytical reasoning abilities;
• High degree of honesty, integrity, transparency, accountability, objectivity, and be capable of providing ethical leadership to the University; and
• Good communication skills.

Key Functions of Council:


The Council, as the highest decision-making body, governs the University, and exercises general oversight over the institutional activities in accordance with the Higher Education Act, national policies for higher education, the CPUT Statute, and applicable legislation.

Remuneration

Term of Office and Remuneration:


The term of office for the appointed candidate will be for the remainder of the term of office of the current Council, until September 2026. These are not salaried positions. However, the appointed person will be paid a stipend for attending meetings at the rate determined by the Council.

Notes

Please note that nominees shall not be persons in the employ, or students at the University, and must have no business or personal relationship with the University.
Only nominations received from recognised labour organisations will be considered.

The nominations must come from recognised labour organisations, in writing, and must be accompanied by the following documentation:


• Detailed and recent Curriculum Vitae of the member, including the following information: work experience and responsibilities; relevant postgraduate qualification and area of expertise; list of current Board experience/ directorships with reference to dates/ and organisations/entities/institutions concerned;
• Motivation letter, wherein it is explained why the person is nominated;
• Names and contact details of three (3) referees;
• Certified copies of qualifications and identity document or passport (all documents must have been certified and dated within the last six (6) months); and
• Declaration by the nominee that no conflict of interest exists with the University (declaration to include information as to whether the nominee belongs to any professional body, and whether he/she has a criminal record or not).


Incomplete nominations will not be accepted.

The appointment of any member to Council and Council committees is subject to a verification process, such as checks on criminal record, financial records, reference checks and qualifications verification. All recommended candidates for Council and Council Committee positions shall be required to complete a verification consent form.

Applications/nominations received after the closing date will not be considered.
