Take it back to basics with a classic, hearty, nutritious pork dish
In the wake of COVID-19, many South Africans are finding themselves going back to basics in terms of nutrition and meal preparation. There’s no need to complicate life in the kitchen – pork is an easy choice for quick, wholesome family dining.
With millions of jobs lost and uncertainty looming, the COVID-19 pandemic has had far reaching consequences for South African families.
Yet, despite these setbacks – we see the spirit of Ubuntu shining through. From top chefs rolling up their sleeves to create meals for underprivileged communities, to organisations collecting food and basic supplies for those in need, South Africa has rallied together.
That can-do attitude has spilled into homes across the country, as parents and caregivers look to create wholesome, uncomplicated meals for their families.
A homemade meal that forgoes fatty or sugary sauces – and embraces basic, fresh ingredients – supplies the macro and micronutrients we need to keep our immune systems and bodies healthy.
Pork is an excellent protein choice. It contains all the essential amino acids that our bodies need to repair and maintain themselves.
It’s really easy to prepare a delicious, flavourful meal with any basic pork cut. Take, for example the humble pork chop.
Perfect pan-fried pork chops, every time:
- Do not wash your chops before cooking, instead pat dry with kitchen paper.
- Season with salt, pepper and the herbs or spices of your choice.
- Any excess fat can easily be removed, as it sits on the outside of the chop – snip through the outer skin of the chop to prevent it from curling up in the pan.
- Fry in a small amount of cooking oil, turning it once the underside has a nice, golden brown crust.
Perfect pork on the braai:
- Get the best results by marinating any pork braai cut for 20 minutes, or longer in a simple homemade marinade of three-parts olive oil, one-part lemon juice or vinegar. Season your marinade with herbs and spices of your choosing.
- Braai pork chops over moderate coals, until just done.
- There’s never any need to overcook pork. South African pork is produced to world class health and hygiene standards and can be enjoyed when cooked just until light grey on the inside for a tender and tasty eating experience.
